To protect the throne, seventeen-year- old spy Kali must play a male guardsman trainee by day and royal lady by night.

Orphaned and trained on a spymaster’s remote estate, Kali is a scout who works alone in the shadows. But when a terror group threatens the Dansil throne, the king forces Kali to accept a mission at the palace or forfeit her sister’s life.

Suddenly thrust into the light, Kali must infiltrate high society as the royal Lady Lianna while penetrating the servant ranks as Kal, a male guardsman trainee. It doesn’t help that Trace, the harsh and enigmatic captain of the king’s guard, is soon assigned as both Lady Lianna’s palace escort and Kal’s commanding officer.

As Kali edges closer to the truth behind the violent group’s identity, she uncovers dangerous secrets that could bring her mission to a brutal end. A scout’s job is to observe and report, never to engage . . . but if it means saving her sister and kingdom, Kali may have no choice.

TRACING SHADOWS, by Amazon bestselling author Alex Lidell, is the first novel in the Scout series. Perfect for fans of Tamora Pierce, Leigh Bardugo, and Sarah J. Maas.

Kalianna aka Kali, niece to the king, was raised by a spymaster to be a scout. She’s been trained to fight alone and observe from the shadows. With threats from a terror group closing in, the king calls Kali back to the palace to protect his heir and learn what she can. Kali poses both as her lady self, Lady Lianna, and as a guard trainee, Kal. In both positions, and even just as herself, she uncovers just how big a threat these terrorists actually pose.

Tracing Shadows was a really quick and entertaining read. The premise of a girl posing as, and passing as, a boy has always drawn me in, and this book is no exception. At under 300 pages, this literally took me about 2 or 3 hours to get through. Even if had been longer, I would have had a hard time putting it down.

I really like Kali as her actual self. She’s self reliant, smart, and strong. She’s fiercely loyal to the only real family she has left, her sister, and is willing to do anything to protect her. She isn’t particularly feminine or masculine, but is easily able to adapt herself to whatever role she needs to.

Kal’s commanding officer, Trace, is Kali’s main adversary. As Kal, he’s a grueling captain, pushing Kal to get better. As Lianna, he is her escort around the palace. Kali has a hard time keeping up with both her roles with him around. He has quite a few big secrets that come to light, and I have to say I did not in the slightest see them coming.

Overall, this was a nice quick story. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a thrilling story with a strong female lead, that also may include magic.
